The 912 and 912S are excellent reliable engines and a few simple checks can help keep them that way. Cold Cranking When starting from cold, always crank the engine with the mags off, for a few seconds. This will help build oil pressure before the engine comes under any load. Carb Rubbers These should be checked every few months for any signs of cracking. Follow Rotax's instructions meticulously when replacing these. Exhaust Springs Keep an eye these as a 912 (especially the S) exerts a lot of vibration onto the exhaust when it starts. If the springs become slack, the exhaust can slip out of its locating socket. A tap with a block of wood will have it back in location!!
Timing If you have a 912 engined aircraft, ensure that you finish your bacon sandwich, coffee and cigarette at least 20 minutes before everyone else. That way you will be ready to take off again at the same time as your friends. Only joking Steve ;-) |
